How Does This Work?

Wordcount: 4000 to 9000 words

Payment and rights: Royalty shares, paid through Pubshare. Rights remain with the author, exclusive to the anthology for no less than six months. Payment of royalties continues so long as book is in print.

File Format: We prefer .docx files, but can handle .rtf if you cannot generate that format. Be sure to include in the filename: title_Yourname_anthologyname

Formatting: Be sure you include your name and email in manuscript
We like Shunn's format guidelines. Do not use heading styles for any other part of your manuscript aside from the title, which should be heading 1 style.

Cover Email: Please include the name of the anthology, your story, and your name, in the subject line of the email as well as the file name of your story. In the body of the email you could include name, title, word count, brief bio, any relevant notes, no need for any kind of query prior to submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does payment work?
This is a royalty-share anthology. Amazon and PubShare take their standard portions first. Whatever is left is divided equally among the contributing authors, the editor, and the cover designer. Everyone—authors, editor, and designer—receives the same share. Payment will continue as long as the books are in print.

Response Time?
You will receive an auto-response on submission of your manuscript to [email protected]. You will receive either acceptance or rejections (note that feedback will not be given) within 2 weeks after the open call window for that anthology closes.

Reprints and Simultaneous Submissions?
Please don't send us reprints without clearly indicating the status in your cover email. Please let us know promptly if your simultaneous submission has been accepted elsewhere and we will withdraw it from consideration.
Only submit one story per open call.

AI Policy?
Look, you know, and we know, that AI generated stories are unreadable. We don't care if it's been assisted by whatever tools you choose to use. Unreadable stories will be rejected out of hand.

Violence, Sex, and Vulgarity
We'd like these books to be suitable for at least teen readers. So keep these themes to a bare minimum, as needed for plot. No explicit sex. No gore. We don't enjoy horror, so that's probably not going to be accepted. Violence happens, and sometimes is necessary in life, so that's not a downcheck in itself.

Deadline?
Each anthology will have an open reading window. We will reject anything coming in before the first day (because we firmly believe authors should read) and you have until midnight on the final day, anywhere in the world you are, to send your story in.

Editing Process? The selection editing will involve reading stories to evaluate them for fit in the anthology, not just great writing, but something that will work to create a harmonious whole book. Following acceptance, copy editing will be carried out with track changes, then returned to the author to accept or reject and respond to any questions by the editors. Stories requiring extensive structural work will be rejected.

Contributor Copies? Authors will be able to purchase copies through Pubshare at wholesale cost. A ePub file will be available to download for each participant.

Marketing and Promotions? We are all in this together. Your royalties will plump up the more you put this book out there. A rising tide lifts all books... er, boats. Sanderley Studios will promote through their email newsletter, website, and bibliographies in other press books. Other marketing will be deployed ad hoc.

Who the Heck Are You? Cedar Sanderson, an editor or three, one curmudgeon, two cats, and a dog. Sanderley Studios has been around since 2017 when Cedar's original imprint of Stonycroft Publishing (ca 2011) was retired and enlarged to include her art as well as writing. Cedar's editing has been seen in anthologies like Can't Go Home Again and But Not Broken as well as various titles published through Raconteur Press. She's also a graphic designer with decades of experience who will be wrangling the covers and illustrations for all Sanderley Studios books.
